The Comparison Between California Chrome and Secretariat Is Eerie
Unless you’re living under a rock you’re aware that the Belmont Stakes is taking place this Saturday. You’re also probably aware that this Belmont could possibly lead to a triple crown victory, something that the world hasn’t seen since the 1978. But what if I told you that current triple crown contender, California Chrome, and 1973 triple crown winner Secretariat look very similar.
When Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby in 1973 he drew the five position. He was in the three position at the Preakness. Finally, Secretariat drew the two spot at the Belmont Stakes.
So what positions was California Chrome in during his wins?
- Kentucky Derby – five spot
- Preakness – three spot
And where will he be on Saturday at the Belmont Stakes? Wait for it – the two spot.
History is certainly on California Chrome’s side. He’s the 3-5 favorite, so you won’t make any money by betting on him, but it’s hard to bet against him.

Unfortunately Secretariat broke from the 10 hole as the 1A in the Derby.
