What We Know About ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ So Far
With the official trailer for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” being released by Marvel yesterday we know a little bit more about what we can expect when the movie hits theaters in May 2015.
I don’t know if there has been a more anticipated movie trailer than this Avengers one. Maybe the first one, but we have been being teased with “Avengers Age of Ultron” for a couple of years now. Yes, Marvel has been busy with other films – films that we loved – but we wanted to know more about Age of Ultron. Now, we do.
So what exactly has happened since the last Avengers movie?
Tony Stark was affected by the whole battle in New York, and is trying to put it behind him. He was having nightmares in “Iron Man 3” and had to rely on his skills not in a suit for most of the film. He’s also got a whole bunch of Iron Man armor, all for various reasons. This is directly linked to Ultron, who from the trailer looks to be some form of AI in Iron Man armor.
According to the official synopsis that was released by Disney, Tony has put in place an old system of keeping the peace. That would be Ultron, who at some point becomes self aware and confronts or attacks the Avengers at either Avengers Tower (the old Stark building) or Tony’s house where they are all gathered.
When we last saw Captain America, he was off to search for Hydra after they corrupted and caused S.H.I.E.L.D. to collapse. I would assume that we’ll see him in pursuit of Hyrda at the beginning of the movie. Maybe that’s where he encounters Quick Silver and Scarlet Witch, who we saw in the end credits scene of Winter Soldier.
Nick Fury, presumed dead by most, is also out trying to find secret Hyrda bases and operatives. Not sure if Black Widow is with him or also out on her own. Everything that was the old S.H.I.E.L.D. has gone dark with the exception of Agent Coulson and his gang.
After defeating the Dark Elves in “Thor: The Dark World” Thor is living on earth, and I would guess with Jane Foster. Other than that, we don’t know what else is going on with Thor. We do know that he’s not in Asgard, Loki has faked his death and either killed or kidnapped Odin and is ruling as him in his place. I’m sure we’ll see more of that explored in the third Thor film.
As far as Bruce Banner and Hawkeye, we haven’t seen them since the first Avengers film. We saw Banner leave with Tony Stark, so perhaps he’s working for Stark Industries in research and development. Hawkeye is most likely staying dark with the collapse of S.H.I.E.L.D.
So I think that brings us up to speed with everyone that is going to be involved.
What happened in the trailer?
Ultron, put in place by Tony Stark and possibly not called Ultron yet, becomes self aware. The whole Hydra thing has thrown humanity into an uproar. No one trusts agencies anymore, and Stark has created some sort of AI peacekeeper.
Presumably there is an initial battle where Ultron totally crushes the Avengers. That’s where we see them in the plane looking like they need a bit of a break. Ultron is smart, and likely out matches the Avengers at first.
What’s the deal with Thor fighting Tony Stark, and Tony Stark fighting The Hulk?
I think Thor is just reacting to Stark telling them about what he did to create Ultron – just a guess. I don’t think Thor would attack Tony for no reason, or that Tony should be viewed as a villain.
As far as Tony fighting the Hulk, that was probably bound to happen. At one point in the comics Tony, along with the Illuminati, decide that the Hulk is too dangerous for Earth and send him off into space. He was also kicked out of the Avengers lineup in the beginning because he was too unpredictable. An unstable creature with super powers is not a good combo. So that might explain the confrontation in the Hulkbuster armor. Or maybe the Hulk is just rampaging and Tony is trying to wrangle him back to the Avengers and away from putting people in danger.
Then there’s Quick Silver and Scarlet Witch. I assume they start off as foes, only to come over to the side of good when Ultron goes crazy on everyone. After all, he believes all humans must die, not just the good guys.
Cap’s shield is broken. Symbolic, yes. The Avengers are broken. Also, Ultron forges a new version of himself from the metal that Cap’s shield which is similar to adamantium. The Avengers movies can’t use adamantium because of the Fox rights to X-Men and what not.
So what about The Vision? No look at him in this first trailer, and maybe we won’t get one until the actual movie. Though Marvel will likely at least release a poster or artwork to show off their latest hero.
What is it all leading to?
Civil War. Not the same exact story line as the comic book, but with the creating of Quick Silver and Scarlet Witch as the next evolution of humans, the age of miracles if you will, and civilization knowing that people like Bruce Banner and Thor exist they are going to want to keep them (people with powers) in check.
All in all, Avengers 2 is going to be an experience. The Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue to be turned upside down leading up the Civil War story in Avengers 3. Somehow this will tie everything together with Ant Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. Also, Thanos. All of this chaos is exactly what he wants. And chaos is what he’s getting.
