Does the ‘Ghetto Chopper’ Project Go To Far?
If you have lived in or near Albany you know the term “Ghetto Chopper.” It’s been around for a long time, but is putting the phrase on t-shirts going a little bit too far?
Smallbany is a Facebook page that posts humorous things about the City of Albany. If you’ve seen it, chances are they’ve made you laugh.
One person who’s not laughing in Albany media personality Ken Screven, who wrote a blog about how they should be ashamed of this promotion.
In his “Off-Camera Perspective” piece, Screven said:
Now I know some may view this ‘Ghetto Chopper’ thing as just a ‘funny’ ‘clever’ ‘hipster’ thing, but I don’t see it that way. Several people who saw the image on Facebook weighed in with displeasure and agreed with me..in fact they brought it to my attention.
Smallbany has made the logo available for print on a variety of merchandise.
I don’t so much think that people find the term “ghetto chopper” offensive as they do the gun that is attached to the logo. While yes, this is humorous idea, I think that it might end up with some pretty nasty backlash for the good folks over at Smallbany.
What do you think? Is the logo offensive? Take our poll, and let us know what you think in the comments below.
