Kmart – “Work on Thanksgiving Or Be Fired”
As you know there are many stores opening their doors on Thanksgiving, forcing many employees to leave their families and homes and take on shifts at their perspective stores.
Kmart is opening its doors at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day and will remain open for 42 hours, meaning undoubtedly there will be employees missing their Thanksgiving dinners in order to work. Kmart says it is trying to fill the slots with volunteers or seasonal hires, workers are telling a different store.
One worker started a petition on Coworker.org asking Kmart to give her mother and other employees the flexibility to take the holiday off. In a press release from the petition organizer, one employee says human resources told them, “if you do not come to work on Thanksgiving, you will automatically be fired.” Another employee says that their manager stated at a staff meeting: ‘Everyone must work Thanksgiving and Black Friday. No time off.”
Only a handful of employees said their stores had given employees the chance to volunteer for a holiday shift. Most workers still have no idea if they’re going to have to work Thanksgiving. Some say they don’t even know their schedules until as little as a day ahead of time. Leaving no time for employees to even plan their Thanksgiving’s around their work schedules.
I do understand the needs of businesses – but it’s Kmart decision to open at 6 a.m. on a holiday. So why force employees, who usually work retail because they have no other options or choices, to give up time with their families? Note to Kmart employees – there are other retail chains that will treat you much better. Just sayin’.
