Why I Can’t Stand This “New” Ghostbusters Movie
When the rumors of a third Ghostbusters movie started surfacing about 3 to 4 years ago, and they seemed to be getting traction, I started to get excited like all the other fans of the movies. We waited and waited for more info, and then we heard it started production! Then we got the trailer. I feel like I was punched in the gut.
Why do I feel this way? Well, it wasn’t what were all lead to expect. Maybe we shouldn’t have expected to get what we’ve seen, but still, I was hopeful like many others. What am I talking about? Well, the new trailer is supposed to give us an idea of what this movie is about, and show us how the characters are related to the story. What we got was just a gender swapped retelling of the first movie, with bad jokes, and slapstick. There is nothing new, or original here that I can see.
Now I’m not against the fact they gender swapped the characters, but come on! They are ALL like the originals! Practically nothing different except for names! Where’s the new stuff? Where is the progression of the story? Sony, do you like shooting yourself in the foot? 5 Spider-Man movies, and 3 Fantastic Four movies, all which sucked on multiple levels. Now you have to go and destroy Ghostbusters too?
Another concern I have is the casting. I mean Melissa McCarthy? I’m just not a fan of her comedy and everything I see her in, makes me think I’m watching a Bridesmaids sequel. She’s just NOT funny to me. Now I could be wrong on the whole thing, and I’m willing to wait and see, but I seriously don’t think Sony thought this through. I mean, have you seen how many dislikes the trailer has on YouTube? 407K dislikes out of 23 Million views! That’s almost 40% of the people who watched it and also voted! I think Sony should be really worried!
