Daniel Radcliffe Cast in ‘Weird Al’ Biopic

When this popped up, I gotta say, I got a cringe down my spine. But then I thought back to how freaked out I was when Michael “Mr. Mom” Keaton was cast as Batman.Bruce Wayne in Tim Burton’s version of the legendary Dark Knight, and he pulled it off! And that kind of made the willies go away. To be honest, I have only seen one movie that Radcliffe has been in since the Harry Potter franchise wrapped up. And that was a movie called “What If?” co-starring Adam Driver. A nice rom-com where he played a guy that had bad luck with relationships and meets a girl at his friend’s party, and they start out as friends, as she already has a boyfriend. But you could see where it was going from there. While a little cliche’ in the plot, Radcliffe did an great job.

This is the hill I am going to stand on and die if necessary by saying he can pull this off. Plus I don’t think it’s going to be all goofy and slap-stickish. Not to say it won’t have it’s zanier moments I guess. Radcliffe has been doing rather zanier roles since Potter. Like a farting corpse (“Swiss Army Man”), Frankenstein’s hunchback henchman (“Victor Frankenstein”), a dog walker (“Trainwreck”), and a neurotic angel (Miracle Workers). So this is nothing new if that is the case with Al’s biopic.

The press release says, “The biopic holds nothing back, exploring every facet of Yankovic’s life, from his meteoric rise to fame with early hits like ‘Eat It’ and ‘Like a Surgeon’ to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle.” I honestly can’t say if this is parody or real life, as I never really paid much attention to Al’s personal life. I just loved his music since the days of it playing on Dr. Demento.

So I’m calling it now. He’s got the chops, and I think he can bring the funny when it’s needed. We already know he can bring the drama for the down to earth real life bits we’ll obviously get from this picture.

The movie is called “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” and  will stream exclusively on the Roku Channel. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
